You are not gainfully employed

Non-working persons must pay social contributions (AV/AI/APG) from the first day of the year following their 20th birthday until they reach retirement age (64 years for women and 65 years for men).

Non-working persons are exempt from contributing if their spouse is gainfully employed, as defined by the AVS insurance, and pays at least two times the minimum contribution, or CHF 1'028.-.

Persons are considered non-working if they do not receive any revenue, or only a very limited amount, from paid employment.  This concerns persons who:

  • take early retirement;
  • receive an AI allowance;
  • are students;
  • are globe-trotters;
  • are unemployed and no longer qualify for benefits;
  • do not work;
  • have a retired spouse;
  • are housewives or house-husbands.

Persons who have never been employed, or have not been gainfully employed for more than 12 months, should contact the AVS agency of their place of domicile.

As from 1st January, 2012, all persons aged 58 or more (born in 1954 or earlier) who take early retirement, do not intend to resume paid employment, or do not have unemployment insurance coverage, will have to register as ‘not gainfully employed (PSA)’ with their last employer’s AVS compensation fund

As a rough guide, the amount of AVS/AI/APG contributions paid by PSAs range between CHF 514.- and CHF 25'700.- per annum.  They are determined on the basis of wealth and annuities.
